Explore the landmarks
01. Sete Cidades
Sete Cidades is a small village located on São Miguel and home to one of the most iconic landmarks – the twin lakes. These lakes consist of Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake), which are located within a volcanic crater. The lakes are known for their distinct colors, caused by the reflection of light on the water and the surrounding vegetation.
How to get there
The Miradouro da Boca do Inferno offers the best view of the twin lakes. There are parking lots nearby but you still have to do an easy 30 minute hike to get to the viewpoint. Make sure to check the weather via Spottheazores.com, as this location is cloudy most of the time.

02. Lagoa do Fogo
Lagoa do Fogo is situated in the center of São Miguel Island. The lake’s name translates to “Lake of Fire,” reflecting its volcanic origins. There are multiple hiking trails that lead to Lagoa do Fogo.
How to get there
From Ponta Delgada take the road towards Ribeira Grande. Then, follow the signs to Lagoa do Fogo or Caldeira Velha. Once you are in the vicinity, you will find designated parking areas.

03. Cha Gorreana
Cha Gorreana is the oldest and currently the only tea plantation in Europe and has been working since 1883. This tea factory cultivates two main tea types: Green Tea and Black Tea. The entire tea production process, from cultivation to processing and packaging, takes place on-site. There is a cafe with free tea tasting but you can also visit the production site.
How to get there
Cha Gorreana is located on the northern coast of São Miguel Island. While the tea factory and shops are open 08/09 AM – 6 pm, the tea plantation can be visited at all time. Please keep in mind, that this is a tea plantation after all, so make sure to not disturb the workers.

04. Salto Cabrito
Salto do Cabrito is a scenic waterfall that cascades down a cliff into a clear pool below. Sometimes you can see people canyoning here and jumping from the waterfall down into the pool!
How to get there
To reach Salto do Cabrito, you need to do a short hike (around 15-20 min) from the parking area.

Relax in the Outdoor Spas
05. Caldeira Velha
Caldeira Velha is a natural thermal spring and protected area and perfect for relaxing after a long day of hiking. There are four different natural pools with different temperatures, all set amidst lush, tropical vegetation for the most tranquil experience.
How to book
Booking is mandatory as the tickets are timed and should be done a few days before your visit. Each slot booked is valid for 90 Minutes. You can book your tickets here for 10 Euros per Person.
06. Poça da Dona Beija
Another must-visit outdoor spa, is Poça da Dona Beija. Although relatively similar to Caldeira Velha, this Spa is open until 11pm and can therefore be visited at night.
How to book
Tickets are available exclusively through their online ticket shop here. The tickets are again timed and valid for 90 minutes. One ticket is priced at 8 Euros per Person
07. Terra Nostra Park
Terra Nostra is technically not a designated outdoor spa like the previous one mentioned but a botanical garden that features 3 different outdoor thermal baths.
This botanical garden is home to an array of tropical plant species from around the world. In the middle of the garden you can find a large, geothermal swimming pool, filled with naturally heated, mineral-rich water. It is so rich in minerals that the water is orange, so prepared to bring either an old bathing suit or dark swimwear to avoid stains.
08. Ponta da Ferraria
Ponta da Ferraria is a natural hot spring which is heated by volcanic activity. Inside the natural pool the water is comfortably warm but the more you move towards the coast line the colder it gets as the water mixes with the cold water from the ocean. There are changing rooms and showers, however the showers didn’t work when we visited.
Tips for visiting
There is no entrance fee and you can visit this natural pool at anytime. However make sure to check the tide times. During a low tide, you will find the warmest water while the water tends to be rougher at high tide times. Make sure to bring your water shoes with you!

09. Pineapple Plantation
The Azores are famous for their pineapples and you can even tour through a pineapple plantation as well! Azorean pineapples tend to have a more intense and concentrated flavor due to a longer maturation time longer maturation time compared to those grown in tropical climates. The pineapples are grown in greenhouses that you can visit for free. Make sure to also try the pineapple-based products such as jams, liqueurs, and even ice cream.

10. Jardim Botânico José do Canto
Jardim Botânico José do Canto is a botanical garden located in Ponta Delgada and can be reached by foot. The garden is renowned for its diverse array of plants, showcasing numerous rare and exotic species from across the globe. It includes various themed sections, such as a rose garden, a fern garden, and areas dedicated to specific plant families. Beyond its botanical collections, the garden also features historical structures, fountains, and sculptures, enhancing its aesthetic and cultural significance.
