Is Jordan safe?
Throughout our entire trip, I never once felt threatened or unsafe. Jordan has become quite a popular destination, so you’ll find tourists almost everywhere you go. In fact, it became a bit of a running joke for us, as we kept bumping into the same travelers at different sites! Jordan’s growing popularity means that you’ll often share your experiences with fellow explorers, adding to the sense of camaraderie and adventure.
How long to stay in Jordan
Many people associate Jordan with the iconic Treasury at Petra or the stunning landscapes of Wadi Rum, but the country has so much more to offer! Jordan is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, and there’s so much to explore beyond the well-known sites. For example, you could easily spend two full days in Petra alone, hiking through its vast archaeological wonders and uncovering hidden gems at every turn. To truly experience the diversity and depth of what Jordan has to offer, plan to stay for at least a week. This will give you enough time to explore everything from ancient ruins and vibrant cities to tranquil deserts and serene beaches.
If you’re short in time, consider doing a guided tour covering the highlights of Jordan in only a few days:
How to enter Jordan & Visa requirements
Visa: The Visa costs you 40 JOD (56 USD / 57 EUR) and you can get it right after your landing at the airport. However, there is one possibility for you to save money on this, which brings me to the next point.
Jordan Pass: If you are planning on visiting Petra, you might consider the Jordan Pass. The Jordan Pass grants you access to over 40 attractions including its main visit Petra. On top you Visa is also included!
Prices:
70 JOD (1 day in Petra)
75 JOD (2 days in Petra)
80 JOD (3 days in Petra)
A one-day pass for Petra is 55 JOD, so if you visit Petra (which I am sure you will), the Jordan Pass can save you some bucks!

How to get around in Jordan:
By car
A rental car will give you the most flexibility to drive around. However, I would say, that the driver style in Jordan is vastly different than the one we are used to in Germany. So if you just got your driver’s license or would feel unsafe, I probably would go with another option.
By Public transport
Yes, it is possible to travel Jordan by public transport, which we did. We have found their busses reliable and punctual. Just keep in mind, that not every city is connected to another. For instance, we had to go to Aquaba twice as a layover.
Their local bus company is called JETT and drives to the main attractions (and more) within Jordan. The prices are good and you will have the chance to lean back and enjoy the beautiful landscape the country has to offer.
You can buy tickets online or arrive a bit earlier at one of their offices and get the tickets there. If you buy them online, be aware that your payment won’t go through unless you are in the country or have a Jordan IP address. Speaking from our experience, you don’t need to book the tickets weeks in advance though, so you can easily book them online once you arrive in Jordan.
Check the JETT schedule & prices here: https://www.jett.com.jo/ar/
By Uber or Taxi
We often used both Uber and Taxi to easily get our luggage from the bus station to the hotel. A lot of Taxi do not have a taxi meter, so tourists can easily be ripped off. Make sure to always negotiate the price before boarding the taxi. We usually negotiated 2-3 JOD for a 10 min ride.
If you are in Amman you can save yourself from this hassle and conveniently get an Uber. This is solely possible in Amman though as Uber can’t operate outside the capital city.
How to get Mobile Data in Jordan
The most budget-friendly way to get internet access is right when you arrive at the airport. After collecting your luggage and making your way toward the exit, you’ll find three stores offering SIM cards: Orange, Zain, and Umniah.
After some research, we chose Orange and were thoroughly satisfied with our decision! Apart from the desert areas, we enjoyed a stable connection throughout our trip with no issues at all.
Cost: 20GB for 15 JOD (valid for 1 week)
Jordan 1 Week Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Amman, Jordan
Fly into Amman, the capital city of Jordan, and land at Queen Alia Airport. If you’re coming from Europe, you’re in luck—most countries only have a one-hour time difference. However, if you’re arriving from the US, be prepared for a seven-hour time difference from Washington, D.C., so take it easy and allow yourself some time to adjust.
If you’re up for it, start exploring the vibrant capital. A must-see, if time permits, is Jerash—an archaeological site with ancient ruins located just a 30-minute drive from Amman. Stroll through the temples and explore the amphitheater to immerse yourself in history.
Where to stay in Amman
Shmeisani
a central business district in Amman. It has a mix of commercial and residential areas, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shops. Most luxury hotels are located in this area.
Landmark Amman Hotel & Conference Center: A 5 star hotel offering great city views and a pool to cool off.
Hilton Amman: Another 5-star accommodations with an indoor pool, sauna and hot tub.
Downtown
The heart of old Amman with traditional markets (souks), and historical sites. Find budget-mid priced accommodations below:
Layaali Amman Hotel: Located within a 8-minute walk from Al Hussainy Mosque and in the vicinity of other historical sites.
Al Midan Hotel: A budget friendly hotel also within walkable distance of the mosque.
Day 2: Cultural Jordan – explore Petra and its world famous treasury
Hop on a bus or drive your car and enjoy the scenic three-hour journey to Petra. Most tour buses arrive around 11 AM, so aim to get there early to beat the crowds.
Be sure to wear your most comfortable shoes—you’ll be doing a lot of walking.
Where to stay in Petra
You will walk a lot around the treasury so having a hotel within a walking distance of the Petra visitor center is very convenient.
Luxury:
Mövenpick Resort Petra – This Resort is just 50 meters from the Visitor Center, making it incredibly convenient for exploring Petra. After a day of hiking, you can relax in the outdoor pool, hit the fitness center, or unwind in the garden. With free parking and 5-star comfort, it’s the perfect place to recharge.
Mid Price:
Esparanza Petra – This hotel is just an 11-minute walk from the Petra Visitor Center, offering easy access to the ancient site.
Petra Sky Hotel (where we stayed) – The location is a bit farther from the Visitor Center, but it’s still just a short taxi ride away. The staff here were some of the friendliest we encountered during our entire trip to Jordan.
Tickets to the treasury
After purchasing your ticket at the ticket office, pass through ticket control to begin your hiking adventure. If you have the Jordan Pass, you still need to pick up your tickets there.
Tickets costs (without Jordan Pass):
One Day | 50 (JD) |
Two Days | 55 (JD) |
Three days | 60 (JD) |
A lovely tip
Petra by Night
If possible, plan to spend a night in Petra on a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday to experience the magical Petra by Night. Hundreds of lanterns illuminate the path through the canyon, leading to the Treasury, where a light show and performance artists await. It’s an unforgettable experience!
Tickets for the night experience need to be purchases separately for 17 JD.
Start by walking through the stunning Siq canyon, which will lead you to the iconic Treasury after about 30 minutes.
Along the way, you’ll be greeted by locals offering camel rides or guided tours to photo spots that require climbing. One small viewpoint offers a view of the Treasury from above, but you’ll need to pay a guide—negotiate and aim to pay no more than 15 JOD for two people.
My Tip: For an even higher viewpoint (and it’s free!), head to a charming café with a view. To reach this spot, embark on the 1.5-hour Al Khubta Trail. After passing the Treasury and the catacombs, you’ll find a sign directing you to the trail on your right.
Day 3: Spend half a day in Petra & Stargazing in the desert of Wadi Rum
Petra is an expansive archaeological site, and unless you’re incredibly fit, it’s nearly impossible to see everything in one day. On your second day, drive to Petra’s back entrance to visit Little Petra. Wander through the stunning landscapes until you reach the Monastery.
After finishing your exploration of Petra, make your way to Wadi Rum to spend a night under the stars in the desert.
Before heading to your accommodation, stop by the visitor center to purchase tickets (3 JOD, included in the Jordan Pass). From there, a driver from your hotel can pick you up in a 4×4. Don’t forget to pack something warm, as desert nights can get chilly.
Day 4: Explore the desert of Wadi Rum & visit film locations
If you loved the movie The Martian, Wadi Rum is a must-visit! The red desert sands and bubble hotels make it feel like you’ve landed on Mars.
Arrange a 2-3 hour tour with a local guide through your hotel to explore the desert and visit attractions like the stone bridge. Wadi Rum truly feels like another world—it’s no wonder it served as a filming location for Star Wars and The Martian.
Where to stay in Wadi Rum
This is where your bucket list dreams come to life! Whether you’re camping under the stars or staying in a bubble resort in the heart of the desert, Wadi Rum offers some of the most unique accommodations you’ll ever experience.
Luxury:
Bubble Luxotel (where we stayed): You’ve probably seen this hotel on social media, and we can confirm it’s absolutely worth the hype. The staff here were incredibly helpful and friendly, making our stay even more memorable. The bubbles themselves look like something straight out of a Martian landscape—truly surreal! While Wadi Rum has plenty of stunning hotels, the outdoor hot tub at Bubble Luxotel was the real game-changer for us. There’s something magical about soaking in warm water while surrounded by the vast desert, especially on those chilly nights when the heated water feels like pure bliss.
Memories Aicha Luxury Camp: Another crowd favorite! Each tent offers a private entrance, stunning mountain views from your sun terrace, and a cozy setup with outdoor seating. Inside, you’ll find a private bathroom with a shower, bathrobes, and complimentary toiletries. Fresh linens and towels are provided for your comfort. The on-site restaurant serves delicious Mediterranean cuisine with vegetarian options, all in the serene desert setting.
Budget / Mid Priced

Things to do and see in Wadi Rum
- Lawrence’s Spring
- Lawrence’s House
- Burda Rock Bridge
- Red Sand Dune
Day 5: Explore the underwater world in Aqaba
Before heading back, spend some time in Aqaba, located on the Red Sea. Aqaba is known for its beautiful coral reefs and world-class diving schools.
If you prefer to relax, you can unwind on the gorgeous beaches. Note that public beaches have restrictions for women wearing bikinis. Instead, head to Berenice Beach Club, a private beach where you can wear whatever you like.
Here, you can relax with a cocktail or book a water activity. From diving to jet skiing, Berenice Beach Club has plenty to offer.
Prices:
Diving – beginner class: 30-50 JOD per person
Berenice Beach Club: 15 JOD (transport included, which can be arranged through your hotel)
Day 6 + 7 Relax and unwind in the Dead Sea
From Aqaba, drive to your final destination: the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea has a salt concentration 10 times higher than regular seawater, making it impossible for plants and animals to survive. The high salt content also means you’ll float effortlessly on the water, even if you’re not a swimmer!
Accommodation options around the Dead Sea are limited and most places are luxury hotels. But if you would want to splurge somewhere, it should be here! Not only to relax after all the hiking and your adventures but also because most of those hotels offer a private access to the Dead Sea.
